Chicago Council of Lawyers urges the legislators to reject legislation that would strip courts of jurisdiction to consider a Habeas Corpus petition

On September 13, 2006, the Council sent to Senator Richard Durbin, Senator Barack Obama, the Illinois Congressional delegation and selected legislators in other jurisdictions a letter outlining our view that legislation containing provisions stripping the courts of the ability to consider a Habeas Corpus petition should be rejected. For a copy of the letter, click here, or contact Executive Director Malcolm Rich to receive a copy.

Council to initiate the Criminal Law Committee

The Chicago Council of Lawyers is pleased to announce the inaugural meeting of the Criminal Law Committee on:

October 11, 2006
4:00 pm
Law offices of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, 333 W. Wacker Dr., 19th Floor
A light dinner will be available.

At this first meeting of the committee, we will discuss our role in the Cook County Criminal Justice Project, a research and advocacy effort aimed at identifying and exploring the strengths and weaknesses of the Cook County criminal justice system, particularly related to the judging and lawyering in felony cases tried at the Criminal Courts Building at 26th and California Ave. The research portion of the project is being conducted by Chicago Appleseed Fund For Justice and the advocacy portion is a joint effort of Chicago Appleseed and the Council. The project is being overseen by a community advisory committee co-chaired by Professor Jack Heinz of Northwestern University School of Law and the American Bar Foundation, and Tom Geraghty of Northwestern University School of Law.

We will also be discussing the CLEAR initiative:

From the website of the CLEAR Initiative: “The goal of the CLEAR Initiative is to create a politically viable process to review and reform the entire Illinois Criminal Code. The Initiative will examine changes made through legislation over the past forty years, in an effort to edit and better align the Code to make it more readable, understandable, consistent and just.”
